As source of carbohydrate. As diluent for IV infusion.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome. Precautions: Dextrose tolerance may be impaired in patients with renal failure and in the early post-traumatic state or in those with severe sepsis. Dextrose infusions, even if iso-osmotic, should not be mixed with whole blood; haemolysis and clumping has occurred.
