Indications

Supply or replenishment of water and electrolytes in dehydration and diseases due to unknown causes, before and after surgery and in cases of possible potassium retention. As a diluent for IV drip infusion.

Dosage

Adults: Usually 500-1000 mL at one time by intravenous drip infusion. The infusion rate should be 300-500 mL per hr (about 75-125 drops per min). Children: 50-1000 mL per hr (about 12-25 drops per min).

Adverse Effects

Cerebral, pulmonary and peripheral oedema and dilution acidosis may occur with a large volume and/or acute infusion.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Precautions: Renal failure due to renal diseases. Cardiac failure. Reduced urinary output due to obstructive urinary tract diseases. Diabetes mellitus.
