Indications

Infected inflammatory conditions.

Dosage

DROP: Adults & Children: 1 or 2 drops four to six hourly. OINT: Adults & Children: Apply a small amount (approx 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac up to three or four times daily.

Adverse Effects

Rise in intra-ocular pressure, corneal thinning or calcification, cataract, fungal infection, local irritation, blurred vision. Reports of Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Contraindications: Viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent infections of the eye. Soft contact lenses. History of herpes simplex keratitis. Glaucoma. Precautions: Prolonged use in pregnancy or infants. Absent or torn posterior lens capsule, iris defects, uveitis, compromised cornea. Monitor IOP esp in at risk patients (e.g., diabetes). Risk of visual disturbances.

Interactions

CYP3A4 inhibitors, anticholinergics, other phosphate containing ocular preps, topical NSAIDs.

Advice to Patient

Wash hands properly before use. To instill medication into eyes, tilt head back, look upward, instill drops or apply thin layer of ointment inside lower eyelid. Close eye and roll eyeball in all directions. Do not blink for 30 seconds. Apply gentle pressure to inner corner of eye for 30 seconds. Contact prescriber if there is eye pain, changes in vision, no improvement or worsening of condition. Avoid touching tip of applicator with eye. Avoid prolonged use. Do not use any other eye preparation for atleast 10 minutes. Do not share medication with anyone else. Wear sunglasses when in sunlight to prevent photosensitivity.
