Cyproterone Acetate

Indications
Anti-androgen treatment in inoperable prostatic carcinoma.
Dosage
Adults: To eliminate the effect of adrenocortical after orchiectomy: 2 tab once or twice daily. Without orchiectomy: 2 tab two to three times daily. Treatment should not be interrupted nor the dosage reduced after improvement or remissions have occurred. To reduce the initial increase of testosterone in treatment with LHRH agonists: Initially 2 tab twice daily alone for 5-7 days, followed by 2 tab twice daily for 3-4 wk together with an LHRH agonist in the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. To eliminate the effect of adrenocortical androgens in treatment with LHRH agonists: Continuation of the anti-androgen therapy with 2 tab once to twice daily. Children: Not applicable.
Adverse Effects
Fatigue, depression, weight gain, gynaecomastia, changes in hair pattern, osteoporosis.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Liver disease. Malignant or wasting disease. (Other than in prostatic carcinoma). Severe chronic depression; history of thrombosis or embolism. Under age of 18 or if incomplete bone or testicular development. Precautions: Diabetes. Liver disease. Check haemoglobin levels and spermatogenesis. Ensure consent of patient to treatment. See literature.

Insulin and antidiabetic requirements may change.
Advice to Patient
Take with or just after meals. Swallow whole tablet with a glass of water. Do not stop taking medication abruptly, gradually reduce the dose as prescribed and then stop. If you miss a dose, skip it, take next dose on scheduled time. Contact prescriber if there is sudden rash or swelling on face/lips/throat. Regularly check blood sugar level and inform prescriber about changes. Avoid alcohol during treatment. Avoid driving, operating machinery, doing tasks that require alertness during treatment and for 24 hours after treatment. Avoid direct sunlight, use protective clothing, wear sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) and eyewear to prevent photosensitivity. Avoid using sunlamp, tanning bed or tanning booth.
