Indications

Infections of respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, biliary tract caused by sensitive organisms.

Dosage

Adults: 200-400 mg in two divided doses. Children: 6-12 mg/kg/day in two divided doses. Lower Respiratory Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr or >50 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hr. <50 kg or >6 mth: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hr. Otitis Media: Adults & Children: >12 yr or >50 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hr. <50 kg or >6 mth: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hr. Upper Respiratory Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr or >50 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hr. <50 kg or >6 mth: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hr. Urinary Tract Infection: Adults & Children: >12 yr or >50 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hr. <50 kg or >6 mth: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hr.

Adverse Effects

GI disturbances. Headaches, dizziness. Rashes. Very rarely pseudomembranous colitis, haemolytic anaemia, encephalopathy.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Hypersensitivity to B-Iactams. Severe renal impairment.

Interactions

Anticoagulants, probenecid, carbamazepine.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Best to take with meals to reduce stomach discomfort. Do not chew or crush extended release tablets. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Shake oral suspension well before measuring and use a calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dose. To improve flavour of oral suspension, refrigerate it but do not freeze. Contact prescriber if there is severe unrelieved diarrhoea, changes in urinary pattern, vaginal itching, vaginal drainage, mouth sores, foul-smelling bloody stool, bloody urine, difficulty in breathing, unusual chills or fever, furry tongue. Take sufficient amount of fluids (2-3 litres per day) to maintain hydration, unless restricted by the prescriber. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.

Absorption: 40%-50%. Half-life elimination: Normal renal function: 3-4 hrs. Moderate impairment (CrCl 20-40 mL/min): 6.4 hrs. Renal failure: Up to 11.5 hrs. Time to peak, serum: Tab, susp: 2-6 hrs. Cap: 3-8 hrs; delayed with food. Excretion: Urine (50%). Faeces (10%).
