Indications

Infections caused by susceptible organisms. Upper & lower respiratory tract, skin & soft tissue infections, UTI.

Dosage

Children: 7 mg/kg/dose twice daily for 5-10 days or 14 mg/kg/dose once daily for 10 days (max: 600 mg/day). Adolescents and Adults: 300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily for 10 days.

Adverse Effects

Anaphylactic shock. Rash, urticaria, erythema, pruritus, fever, oedema, granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, haemolytic anaemia, colitis, soft stools, diarrhoea, GI upsets, stomatitis, candidiasis, vit K or vit B deficiencies, headache, dizziness & chest tightness.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: History of anaphylactic shock. Hypersensitivity to penicillins & cephalosporins, rash, urticaria.

Interactions

Iron products, probenecid, anticoagulants, antacids.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Take at regular intervals, as scheduled. Take iron salts and aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids at least 2 hours before or after taking medication. Shake oral suspension well before measuring and use a calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dose. To improve flavour of oral suspension, refrigerate it but do not freeze. Contact prescriber if there is severe unrelieved diarrhoea, vaginal itching, vaginal drainage, mouth sores, foul-smelling bloody stool, bloody urine, unusual chills or fever, skin rash, difficulty in breathing. Watery or bloody stools can occur 2 or more months after therapy and can be serious, requiring immediate treatment. Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.
