Indications

Infections of the respiratory tract, ENT, urinary tract, skin, soft tissue and bones. Gynaecological and obstetrical infections. Gonorrhoea and syphilis. Dental procedures.

Dosage

Adults: Usually 1 gm daily in two divided doses. Children: 4 mth - 2 yr, 125-250 mg daily; 3-6 yr, 250-500 mg daily. All in two divided doses.

Adverse Effects

Hypersensitivity, GI upset, pseudomembranous colitis, neutropenia, rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Renal impairment. Hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Interactions

Loop diuretics, probenecid, metformin.

Pharmacokinetics

Bioavailability: 50%-75%. Half-life elimination: 1.7 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: Oral: 1-2 hrs. IV: 30 mins. Excretion: Urine (85%).
