Calcium Acetate
Immunomodulator · Phosphate binder
Indications
Control of hyperphosphataemia in end stage renal failure; Does not promote aluminium absorption.
Dosage
Adults: On dialysis: Initial 2 tab with each meal, can be increased gradually to bring the serum phosphate value less than 6 mg/dL as long as hypercalcaemia does not develop. Usual dose 3-4 tab with each meal. Do not give additional calcium supplements.
Adverse Effects
Mild hypercalcaemia manifested by constipation, anorexia, nausea, vomiting. Severe hypercalcaemia manifested by confusion, delirium, stupor and coma. Pruritus, allergic reaction.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Contraindications: Hypercalcaemia, renal calculi.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Primarily absorbed from the small intestine via active transport and passive diffusion, vitamin D enhances absorption. Excretion: Mainly via faeces. Urine (20%).
