Bismuth Subsalicylate

Antidiarrhoeal · Antisecretory, antimicrobial, antacid

Indications

Diarrhoea, indigestion, upset stomach and nausea.

Dosage

The dosage may be repeated 1/2-1 hr, if needed to max 8 doses in 24 hr. Adults: 2 tab or 2 tablespoonful. Children: Above 12 yr, same as adult; 9-12 yr, 1 tab or 1 tablespoonful; 6-9 yr, 2 tsp; 3-6 yr, 1 tsp.

Adverse Effects

Darkening of stool and tongue.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Not rated. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: The product contains salicylate.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Before swallowing, chew tablet well or shake suspension well. Contact prescriber if diarrhoea remains for more than 2 days or ringing in the ear (tinnitus) occurs. Tinnitus indicates toxicity.

Absorption: Bismuth: <1%. Subsalicylate: >80%. Metabolism: GI tract. Half-life elimination: Terminal: Bismuth: 21-72 days. Salicylate: 2-5 hrs. Excretion: Bismuth: Urine and biliary. Salicylate: Urine.
