Bempedoic Acid
Hypolipidaemic/Anti-atheroma · Adenosine triphosphate citrate lyase (ACL) inhibitor
Indications
As an adjunct to diet and maximally tolerated statin therapy for the treatment of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia or established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease who require additional lowering of LDL-C.
Dosage
Adults: 180 mg orally once daily. Children: Not recommended.
Adverse Effects
Upper respiratory tract infection, muscle spasms, hyperuricaemia, back pain, abdominal pain or discomfort, bronchitis, pain in extremity, anaemia and elevated liver enzymes.
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: History of tendon disorders. Tendon rupture. Precautions: Assess uric acid levels periodically. Discontinue at the first sign of tendon rupture.
Interactions
Simvastatin, pravastatin (avoid).
Advice to Patient
Rest at the first sign of tendinitis or tendon rupture and immediately inform prescriber. Take with or without meals.
