Bronchodilator & Anti-asthma Preps: Orals/Parenterals · Beta-2 agonist

Indications

Bronchospasm in asthma, reversible airways disease.

Dosage

Adults: 10 mg once daily at night. If necessary, increase to 20 mg once daily. Patients previously tolerating ß2-agonists may be started and maintained on 20 mg once daily. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Hypokalaemia, tremor, headache, cramps, palpitations, arrhythmia, sleep disturbance, urticaria, exanthema.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Contraindications: Significant liver dysfunction, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Precautions: Moderate to severe renal impairment. Myocardial insufficiency, thyrotoxicosis. Diabetes, Monitor serum potassium levels in severe asthma.

Interactions

Suxamethonium, beta blockers, other muscle relaxants, halogenated anaesthetics, hypokalaemic agents.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Take immediately before bedtime. Do not chew or crush tablets, swallow whole. Tablets may be divided in half if necessary.

Duration: 24 hrs. Absorption: 20% of dose is absorbed from GI tract. Metabolism: Hepatic; extensive. Half-life elimination: Bambuterol: 13 hrs. Active metabolite; terbutaline: 21 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 4-7 hrs.
