Indications

Treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza in patients =12 yrs who have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hrs and who are: otherwise healthy, or at high risk of developing influenza-related complications. Post-exposure prophylaxis of influenza in patients =12 yrs following contact with an individual who has influenza.

Dosage

ORAL: Adults and Children =12 yrs: Body wt <80 kg: TABS: Two 20 mg tabs taken at the same time for a total single dose of 40 mg. SUSP: 40 mg/20 mL (1 bottle) taken as a single dose. =80 kg: TABS: Two 40 mg tabs taken at the same time for a total single dose of 80 mg. SUSP: 80 mg/40 mL (2 bottles) taken as a single dose).

Adverse Effects

Diarrhoea, bronchitis, nausea, vomiting, sinusitis, headache.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Angioedema, urticaria, erythema multiforme.

Interactions

Avoid coadministration with polyvalent cation-containing laxatives, antacids, or oral supplements (e.g., calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, or zinc). Live attenuated influenza vaccines.

Advice to Patient

Take with or without meals. Take as a single dose as soon as possible and within 48 hrs of influenza symptom onset for treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza or following contact with an individual who has influenza. Avoid coadministration with dairy products and calcium-fortified beverages. Take susp as soon as possible but no later than 10 hrs after constitution by the healthcare provider because the product does not contain a preservative.
