Indications

Respiratory, ENT, skin and soft tissue infections. UTI and gonorrhoea. Paratyphoid fever.

Dosage

Adults: 400 mg twice daily. In severe infections 800 mg twice daily. Children: 25-50 mg/kg/day in two equal doses.

Adverse Effects

Hypersensitivity, GI upset, rash, transient rise in liver enzymes. Rarely pseudomembranous colitis.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: No evidence of risk in humans. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-Iactams. Precautions: Infectious mononucleosis and/or acute leukaemia of lymphoid origin. Renal impairment.

Interactions

Anticoagulants, allopurinol, probenecid.

Advice to Patient

Contact prescriber if there is rash, itching, hives, tightness of chest, difficulty in breathing, stomach pain, loose watery stools, severe diarrhoea, white patches in mouth, vaginal itching and discharge.

Absorption: Rapidly and completely absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Hydrolyzed in the intestinal wall and plasma. Bioavailability: Oral: 98%. Time to peak, plasma: Oral: 30-60 mins. Excretion: Urine (75%).
