Antacid, Antiflatulent · Antacid/Antiflatulent/Antispasmodic
Indications
Peptic ulcer, gastric hyperacidity, gastritis with meteorism, belching, flatulence and heartburn.
Dosage
Adults: 1-2 tsp after meals and at bed time.
Adverse Effects
Diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, nausea, intestinal obstruction (large dose).
Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)
Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Low phosphate diet, renal impairment.
Interactions
May alter absorption of tetracyclines, Fe salts, H2-receptor antagonists, INH, warfarin, quinidine.
Pharmacokinetics
ALUMINIUM HYDROXIDE: Onset of action: Variable. Duration: 20-80 mins. Absorption: Minimal absorption. Small amounts may be absorbed systemically. Excretion: Faeces. MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE: Onset of action: 0.5-3 hrs. Duration: Variable. Absorption: About 15%-50% is absorbed very slowly through the small intestine. Metabolism: Does not undergo metabolism. Excretion: Urine (absorbed portion of drug). Faeces, saliva (unabsorbed portion of drug). SIMETHICONE: Absorption: Not absorbed into the blood stream. Metabolism: Not metabolized. Bioavailability: None. Excretion: Excreted unchanged in faeces. DICYCLOMINE: Absorption: Rapid. 67% of an oral dose is absorbed from the GI tract. Bioavailability: For IM inj, it is greater than that of oral dose. Half-life elimination: For the first 9 hrs after a single dose: 1.8 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 1-1.5 hr. Excretion: Urine (79.5%). Faeces (8.4%).
