Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide

Antacid, Antiflatulent · Antacid

Indications

Peptic ulcer, hiatus hernia, acute and chronic recurrent gastritis, dyspepsia, all other forms of gastric hyperacidity and flatulence.

Dosage

Susp: Adults: 1 or 2 tsp. Children: Above 6 yr, 1 tsp; Under 6 yr, not recommended. All preferably one and three hr after meals and at bedtime. Tab: Adults: 1-2 tab chewed or sucked after meals or when required. Children: Over 6 yr, half adult dose; under 6 yr, not recommended. Powd: Adults: 1 or 2 sachet. Children: Above 6 yr, 1 sachet; Under 6 yr, not recommended. All preferably one and three hr after meals and at bedtime.

Adverse Effects

Constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, intestinal obstruction (large dose).

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Risk cannot be ruled out. Lactation: Caution advised or effect undetermined. Precautions: Renal dysfunction, low phosphate diet, prolonged use.

Interactions

Alters absorption of tetracyclines, INH, Fe salts, warfarin, digoxin, H2 receptor antagonists, chlorpromazine, alkalinization of urine may increase plasma quinidine.

Pharmacokinetics

ALUMINIUM HYDROXIDE: Onset of action: Variable. Duration: 20-80 mins. Absorption: Minimal absorption. Small amounts may be absorbed systemically. Excretion: Faeces. MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE: Onset of action: 0.5-3 hrs. Duration: Variable. Absorption: About 15%-50% is absorbed very slowly through the small intestine. Metabolism: Does not undergo metabolism. Excretion: Urine (absorbed portion of drug). Faeces, saliva (unabsorbed portion of drug).
