Acipimox

Hypolipidaemic/Anti-atheroma · Nicotinic acid derivative

Indications

Hyperlipidaemias of types IIb and IV in patients who have not responded adequately to diet and other appropriate measures.

Dosage

Adults: Usually 500-750 mg daily in divided doses. Children: Not recommended.

Adverse Effects

Vasodilations, flushing, itching, rashes, urticaria, erythema; heartburn, epigastric pain, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, malaise, dry eyes; rarely angioedema, bronchospasm, anaphylaxis, dyspepsia, asthaenia.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Peptic ulcer, severe renal impairment. Precautions: Renal impairment (avoid if creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min). Monitor renal and hepatic function.

Interactions

Fibrates, statins.

Advice to Patient

Take with or after meals.

Absorption: Rapidly and completely absorbed from the GI tract. Metabolism: Not significantly metabolized. Bioavailability: 100%. Half-life elimination: 2 hrs. Time to peak, plasma: 2 hrs. Excretion: Urine (unchanged).
