Indications

Treatment and prevention of asthma and COPD.

Dosage

Adults: 2 tsp twice a day. Children 1-6 yrs: 2.5 mL (half tsp) twice a day. 6-12 yrs: 1 tsp twice a day.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, haematemesis, diarrhoea, headache, irritability, insomnia, tachycardia, extrasystole, hypotension, tachypnoea, occasionally albuminuria and hyperglycaemia.

Risk Factor (Pregnancy/Lactation)

Pregnancy: Contraindicated in pregnancy. Lactation: Contraindicated or not recommended. Contraindications: Acute MI. Severe hepatic/renal impairment. Fructose intolerance. Glucose-galactose malabsorption. Sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency. Hypotensive conditions. Precautions: Elderly. Cardiac insufficiency. Hypertension. Severe hypoxemia. Hyperthyroidism. Chronic cor pulmonale. CHF. Peptic ulcer. History of seizures. GI disorders.

Interactions

Erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, cimetidine, furosemide.

Advice to Patient

Eat foods high in potassium, such as beets, tomatoes, bananas, asparagus, oranges, potatoes, and avocados. Drink lots of water every day to stay hydrated and thin mucus, which will facilitate coughing. Avoid foods like cabbage, beans, garlic, onions, shrimp, pickled foods, dried fruits, fried foods, wine, carbonated drinks, and bottled lemon and lime juice that might exacerbate asthma symptoms. Give up smoking.
